Naked Bikes for Beginners

When you’ve passed your test and have outgrown your 125cc engine, it’s sometimes hard to know which motorbike you should upgrade to next. As a start, a beginner bike should have a few points to look out for:

  • Small Engine
  • Lightweight
  • Cost-effective

You’ll also have to pay attention to where you want to ride it, how long you want it to last, how easy it is to maintain, and so on, but these points are unique to you.

However, naked bikes are some of the best for new riders to gain experience on – they generally have the weight and balance requirements for beginners to grow in confidence and skills. So here are some of our top naked bikes for beginners to get you started in your search.

Triumph Speed 400

For a beginner bike, the level of detail and engineering on the Speed 400 is fantastic – you don’t need to change anything to get started and enjoy many miles of fun. The firm says they have built the bike to attract new customers and have paid the same amount of detail to this basic starter bike as they have to their large engine rides. It delivers power in a smooth and controlled way. Even though it doesn’t pack a punch, it’s still very fun to ride. It’s also lightweight with sporty handling – a perfect beginner bike, in our opinion.

Yamaha MT-03

This is the naked version of the YZF-R3, which has the same wheels, engine, and so on. It can get to 70mph with ease and will sit for hours there comfortably – so it is an easy ride if you need to travel long distances regularly. Its power is unintimidating but accessible when needed. It even has a pillion seat. Despite being a larger-styled bike (nearly as big as the MT-07), it has a low seat, making it easy to get your feet down, and it is still built to be lightweight. You get the presence of a big bike without the fuss of riding one.

Kawasaki Z400

The Kawasaki 400 has long been held as a fantastic beginner bike, and the z400 is the naked equivalent. It has exceptionally smooth power delivery, making it very forgiving for beginner riders. It managed to strike the fine balance between not having so much power that it is intimidating but enough so that it can keep up as experience develops. The bike is very lightweight, too – this can lead to a slightly wilder ride on fast roads, but it’s perfect for throwing the bike around town.

Honda CB300R and CB500F

Both of these bikes are fantastic beginner bikes, and, really, the only way to choose is to go try them out. They are very similar ergonomically, and with Honda, you know you’re going to get a high-quality bike at a good price. Fundamentally, the CB300R is smaller than the CB500F in every way. This makes it an excellent beginner bike – easy to chuck around corners and will let you put miles on the clock in a safe way that boosts your confidence. The CB500F is very similar, but as it’s a bit bigger, you will either find it slightly harder to ride (which might put you off getting that necessary experience), or you will be more comfortable with it, and it will last you that little bit longer. It fully depends on your own experience, other bikes you’ve tried, the types of journeys you want to do, and how often you want to upgrade your bike.
