Every motorbike that comes our way will be in a different condition to another. The condition will always affect the price along with a number of other factors, here’s some information on how we categorise a used motorbike’s condition:
Excellent
Bikes marked as excellent condition will be those that have been looked after exceptionally well or haven’t been ridden much.
There should be minimal to no wear and tear on the bike – no marks, scratches, or damage to any part of the bike. The mechanics and working parts of the bike should all be in good working condition with no faults.
It should come with a full service history over its lifetime, and there should be no signs that it has even been dropped or badly damaged.
Checklist:
- No marks, scratches, or damage
- No rust or corrosion
- Minimal to no wear and tear
- Full service history
- Tyres, brakes, chain/sprockets, suspension, and all mechanics are in good condition
- No signs of ever being dropped/damaged
Good
Many bikes will be well-loved and well-ridden but still fit into our ‘good’ category. Again, there should be no marks or damage to the bike, but more wear and tear is accepted – though it should still be minimal.
There should be no faults with the workings of the bike, and again, it should have no signs that it has ever been dropped.
Checklist:
- No marks, scratches, or damage
- No rust or corrosion
- Minimal wear and tear
- Tyres, brakes, chain/sprockets, suspension, and all mechanics are in good condition
- No signs of ever being dropped/damaged
Average
Most bikes will fit into the average category, these are bikes that have been used and loved over the years with many adventures shared. These are great bikes, but their condition will typically show how much they’ve been loved.
There should be no major damage on the bike, but there will probably be age-related marks and wear and tear from fair use. However, all the mechanics of the bike should be running and working without problem and in ‘fair’ condition.
Checklist:
- Age-related marks/scratches but no major signs of damage
- Fair wear and tear
- Tyres, brakes, chain/sprockets, suspension, and all mechanics in fair condition
Below Average
Bikes in below average condition are those which have clear problems. If a bike has been dropped, it automatically falls into this category. Any damage beyond minor scratches or known faults would also put the bike in ‘below average’ condition.
If the bike needs repairing, either cosmetically or mechanically, then it will also be marked as below average. This will need to be fixed before it can be sold to another person.
Checklist:
- Any bike dropped, damaged, or with known faults.
- Bikes requiring mechanical or cosmetic repair.
There are many factors that go into the valuation of a motorbike, and the condition is an important one. The price for a bike that can be ridden away from the garage is going to be higher than a bike that needs repairs or alterations before it can be ridden.
