Cambridge isn’t just a postcard city for punting tourists and academic gowns. It’s a surprisingly rewarding base for motorcyclists who like to mix a bit of culture with open-road freedom. One minute you’re gliding past centuries-old colleges, the next you’re carving through quiet fenland roads with barely another vehicle in sight. It’s that contrast that makes it special.
Riding Around Cambridge (Properly)
City & Riverside Routes – slow it down, take it in
The historic centre around the University of Cambridge is not built for speed. Think tight streets, cyclists everywhere, and the occasional tourist stepping into the road like it’s their living room. But ride it right, and it’s worth every second.
Roll past landmarks like King’s College Chapel and The Backs, where the views are properly iconic. This isn’t a “blast through” kind of ride, it’s more of a slow cruise where you actually look around instead of staring at your speedo.
Once you follow the River Cam out of the city, things start to breathe. Traffic thins, the roads widen a touch, and you can settle into an easy rhythm. It’s ideal for a chilled-out Sunday ride where the goal isn’t getting somewhere fast, it’s just enjoying the ride itself.
Rider tip: Early mornings or evenings are your best bet. Midday traffic in Cambridge can test the patience of a saint.
Countryside Escapes – where Cambridge really shines
Here’s where things get properly enjoyable. Head out of the city and you’re immediately into classic East Anglia, big skies, open roads, and that peaceful, slightly forgotten feel.
A run up to Ely is a must. The road is smooth, easy-going, and leads you straight to the stunning Ely Cathedral, which rises out of the flat landscape like something out of a film. It’s the kind of place you park up, grab a coffee, and just take it in.
Heading east towards Newmarket gives you a slightly different vibe. This is horse racing country, so expect long, flowing roads and plenty of countryside views. It’s less about twisties and more about smooth, uninterrupted riding. Perfect if you just want to relax and let the bike do its thing.
Along the way, you’ll pass through villages that feel like they haven’t changed in decades, flint cottages, quiet lanes, and pubs that practically demand a stop. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
The Fens – flat, fast, and oddly addictive
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room: it’s flat. Very flat. If you’re chasing hairpin bends and mountain passes, you won’t find them here.
But don’t write it off.
The The Fens offer something different, long, open stretches where you can see for miles. There’s a strange kind of freedom in it. No blind corners, no constant braking. Just smooth, flowing riding.
On a clear day, with the sun low and the road stretching out ahead, it’s surprisingly brilliant.
Longer Day Rides – when you fancy stretching your legs
Cambridge also works as a launchpad for bigger rides if you’re not ready to call it a day.
- Head south towards Saffron Walden for more characterful roads and proper countryside charm
- Drift west into Bedfordshire for slightly more varied riding
- Or push further into Suffolk for a mix of coastal routes and inland scenery
Nothing here is extreme, but that’s the point. It’s easy riding, low stress, and ideal for clearing your head.
